The outbreak of war between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union increased the transport tasks of the German railways. The condition for their implementation were quick delivery of a large number of locomotives and wagons. The acceleration of a current production was achieved by introducing simplifications in the production process of some components and designing a new war type locomotive, which was extremely simplified in terms of implemented technology  and economic in terms of used materials version of a standardized  freight locomotive of 50 series. The new units received the designation of 52 series. Their production between 1942-1945  was undertaken by all factories in  German-occupied countries. In all more than 6,000 copies were built. At the Polish State Railways they were designated as Ty2. It was the most numerous  series of Polish  steam locomotives. After the reconstruction of destroyed units and the purchase of 200 units in the USSR between 1962-1963 the highest inventory number reached 1407.  The Ty2 locomotives, easy to use and easy o maintain; enjoyed a good reputation.  The Ty2-572 steam locomotive (designation DRG 52 5702) began its service at the  Gdańsk Zaspa locomotive shed and ended it at  Bydgoszcz Główna. It was deleted from the inventory on 10 December 1995.
